Tech tips Nano Nails – Fake nails stylus

Nano Nail - stylus fingertip fake nails

Tech Tips have designed a press on nail with a hidden stylus under each tip so every finger acts a stylus with your touch screen devices.

I love using my stylus on my ipad, but a pen it too awkward to use on a phone. I’m still not convinced about press on nails, but this video intrigues me.

Due to be released in May, there’s still no word as to the colour range available. Or whether you can paint your own nail art on them, which are the really important questions.

Are you a fan of press on nails?

My Nail Romance with Lab Muffin

Lab Muffin - My Nail Romance

One blog isn’t enough to contain Michelle Wong’s Nail Romance. In addition to her main beauty blog, Lab Muffin, she contributes to Polish or Perish and is a founding member of the new nail community Lacquerheads of Oz. Michelle has almost finished her PhD in chemistry and when she’s not busy blogging, she’s slogging away at her thesis or in the pole dance studio.

Tell me a bit about your blog

I started Lab Muffin in December 2011, mainly because my boyfriend was sick of seeing my nails (and nowhere near appreciative enough)! I’m also passionate about science literacy, and was disappointed in how badly beauty science is communicated, leading to so many myths and misunderstandings. So Lab Muffin is my attempt to make a little difference in the world by helping ordinary girls wade through marketing jargon, while making everyone check out my nails!

To give people a rest, I started posting swatches on Polish or Perish, an international blog run by “women with almost as much polish as they do education” – we all have or are working towards higher degrees.

Recently, a group of Aussie nail bloggers, nail techs, polish makers and other enthusiasts started Lacquerheads of Oz, which will gather all the nail polish knowledge out there, both for experts and girls just starting out, into one handy website. I’m very excited to be involved!

How often do you post?

5-7 times a week these days across the three blogs… a bit of a hectic schedule but I love it 🙂

Are you left or right handed?

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

I’m a bit ambidextrous from piano so it’s not too bad, but resting both wrists or elbows on a hard object makes it easier. And practice, of course!

How often do you paint your nails?

Every 3-5 days – I find that my nails tend to chip if they aren’t protected by a shield of polish.

How many polishes in your collection?

I put them all in a Google spreadsheet recently – under 400 not including doubles. Don’t tell the boyfriend.

How do you store your polishes?

I have that hallmark of a polish addict: the IKEA Helmer. I have one drawer each for cremes, shimmers, special finishes, toppers, base and top coats, and the dreaded untrieds. The boyfriend has said that he’ll leave me when I run out of space in it.

Which brand has the best brush?

Funnily enough, so far it’s been Bio Sculpture, who aren’t usually known for their polishes! I swatched four in a row without getting even the slightest drop on my skin – a first.

Favourite polish brand?

All of them! It’s hard for me to say but OPI, China Glaze and Essie have great ranges and hardly ever disappoint.

Favourite indie brand?

So hard to choose out of my favourite Aussies: Gloss ‘n Sparkle, Emily de Molly, Femme Fatale, Loki’s Lacquer and Pretty Serious! So I won’t 😛

Best luxe brand?

Chanel shades are always very covetable! Butter London is also amazing.

Best bargain buy?

ulta3 and Essence are great value for money.

Favourite colour?

Purple, coral and green, and teal! Especially teal.

Favourite colour combinations?

Purple and gold is always a winner!

Best colour for work?

Neutrals – brown and nude are nice, worksafe colours.

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Use a good base coat, and use a top coat that isn’t quick-dry. I use Orly Bonder as my base coat, and while I love Seche Vite top coat, I don’t recommend it if you want your nails to stay chip-free for longer than a couple of days.

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

I love bold designs, so tape manicures – they’re amazing for getting crisp lines!

Kate Moss talks…about nails

Click here if you can’t see the embedded video

Kate Moss is launching a new range of nail polish with Rimmel London called Salon Pro. Kate rarely does video interviews and I loved hearing her talk about her nails and how she wears nail polish.

Kate’s favorite nail shape? “My dream nail shape would be a Sixties oval or long, almond-shaped nail,” she said. “I’ve heard square nails are coming back – but I’m fighting it!”

Kate told Grazia UK “I love colour and nail polish is an easy way to experiment with it, adding the perfect finishing touch to any outfit. Just like I always have the perfect playlist to match a certain mood, I really wanted to create a range of shades for every mood and occasion”.

The new Rimmel Salon Pro with Lyrca collection will be available from 10 April 2013. The collection includes Kate Moss’ ten new shades that read like a playlist for your nails. Colors include New Romantics, Rock’n’Roll, Classical Red, Punk Rock, Disco Fever, Rhythym & Blues and Kate’s favorite neutral Soul Sessions.

Kate is not a fan of matching your nails, or your clothes. “On a set it would be a big no-no to match the lip with a nail. There’s always a clash.”

Do you like to match your nails or do you like to clash like Kate?

Illamasqua I’mperfection Speckled Nail Polishes

Nail Romance - Illamasqua Speckled Nail Polish

Nail Romance - Illamasqua Speckled Nail Polishes Fragile and Scarce

“The beauty is in our differences, our imperfection is our beauty.” Alex Box.

I love the philosophy behind each Illamasqua collection. The latest offering “I’mperfection” celebrates our flaws and differences.

This spring release included five limited edition speckled nail varnishes. Inspired by the unique markings on birds eggs, the five colors available are:

  • Freckle – speckled soft neutral
  • Fragile – Speckled soft blue (as seen on my ring finger)
  • Mottle – Speckled soft green
  • Scarce – Speckled soft pink (as seen on my nails)
  • Speckle – Speckled soft lilac (as seen in the top photo)

Each polish is semi-opaque and contains various sized matte glitter flecks. The resulting effect is almost like a layered glitter. Use a white base coat for a stronger color finish, or let your nails peek through ever so slightly. I’m wearing two coats on my nails in the above photos.

Also worth looking out for from the new collection are the blush duos (especially Lover & Hussy) which are highly pigmented and come in a handy compact.

Do you embrace your imperfections? And would you wear speckled nails? I think these will be perfect for some Easter themed nail art.

Illamasqua is available from Sephora, Myer and

My Nail Romance with Nihrida

Nihrida - My Nail Romance

Today’s blog spotlight is on Sasha of Nihrida is known for her beautiful and creative photography, and her nail polish database is an amazing visual resource.

Tell me a bit about your blog

I like to call my blog a personal blog. I write about the stuff I like (nail polish and make up included), about my animals, and sometimes even about my current mood.

How often do you post?

As often as I feel is right. Sometimes I won’t update my blog for more than a week, but lately, I post almost every day.

Are you left or right handed?

Right handed.

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Painting my other (left) hand isn’t a problem, since I’m right handed. I find it easier to paint the nails on my dominant hand first. I like to start at the pinkie fingernail and move towards the thumb nail.

How often do you paint your nails?

About 3 times per week. If I’m not counting the nail polish swatching.

How many polishes in your collection?

A LOT. I don’t have them counted, but I did organize a nail polish database of the polishes I got. I don’t own all of them anymore though.

How do you store your polishes?

In carton boxes. (Note: just bought an Ikea Helmer)

Which brand has the best brush?

I can’t say which brand has the best brush, but I like flat, flexible brushes that aren’t too big and chubby. Tip Top polishes have great brushes.

Favorite polish brand?

Don’t have just one favorite brand.

Favorite indie brand?

I don’t like indie polishes. It seems to me they don’t belong in my collection. They’re too random and not categorized enough. Plus they’re mostly funky glitters which is not my favorite finish.

Best luxe brand?

Best bargain buy?

Essence Colour & Go polishes. The old ones.

Favorite color?

Purple, electric blue.

Favorite color combinations?

Mint and gold.

Best color for work?

Vampy neutral red (something like Tip Top Red Rendezvous).

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Nothing works for me since my nails peel on a regular basis – wrapping tips works when my nails have a good day.

What’s your favorite nail art trend?

Gradient manicure.

Blue Valentine – Easy heart nail art

Nail Romance - Blue Valentine heart nail art - blue purple ombre manicure

Nail Romance - Blue Purple multi color nails with heart nail art

I’m not really into Valentine’s Day, though I do love hearts. This heart nail art is quick and easy to do, but won’t be too in your face for Valentine’s Day.

Blue Valentine – how to get the look

I first painted my nails in a mix of blues and purples. I couldn’t decide which color so I used them all in this ombre manicure.

Nail polishes used:

Miss Frou Frou SkyeHello Darling  DreamboatMaybelline Color Show Sapphire SirenMiss Frou Frou SurrenderBloom Emily Green Navy

Heart Nail Art

The hearts were inspired by …Love Maegan‘s nail art and I’ve also used the same technique on this simple heart manicure.

Using Hello Darling Dreamboat on the dark nails, and Bloom Emily Green Navy on the light nails, paint an X-shape that falls off the edge of your nails.

Style Secret

I use this nail art a few days into my manicure as it’s a great way to cover up any chips or wear on the edge of your nails. Just paint one heart for a sweet feature nail too.

Do you get into Valentine’s Day or do you play it a little more low key?

Ombre manicure: Blues and purples

You know for those days when you can’t decide what colour to wear? Why not wear them all!

Bloom Navy nail polish - Nail Romance

I love all these polishes and I’ll show you some fun nail art with this manicure next week. If I had to pick a standout, the Bloom polish, part of the Emily Green collaboration, has incredible depth of color and is a beautiful formula to use. It’s opaque in one coat, though I’m wearing two thin coats of all the colors for this multicolor manicure.

Have you tried any of these shades? Which is your favorite?

My Nail Romance with A Girl and Her Polish

A Girl and Her Polish - My Nail Romance

Meet Katee Baum, the nails behind A Girl and Her Polish. She is a self-proclaimed nail polish-oholic and shares swatches and nail art, including tutorials on her blog.

Tell me a bit about your blog

I started blogging about my adventures in nail polish a year ago and I love it! On my blog, A Girl and Her Polish, I share my nail art and review nail polish. I am a complete novice and have never had any sort of training. Everything I do is about my love of nail polish. I show step-by-step techniques so that you at home can recreate my designs and my nail polish reviews give my honest opinion so you don’t waste your time with bad polish!

How often do you post?

I post at least once a day, although some days I have posted a couple times.

Are you left or right handed?

I am right handed.

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Take your time and don’t rush it. If you do make a mistake you can always go back and clean it up.

How often do you paint your nails?

It depends on what I am involved with. If I am doing a few challenges I can change my polish everyday, or a couple times a day. On average I probably change my polish at the least, 4 times a week.

How many polishes in your collection?

I have 836 bottles of polish.

How do you store your polishes?

All of my polish is stored in 2 Helmers from Ikea.

Which brand has the best brush?

I have small nail beds, so I tend to like the littler brushes better. I think butter LONDON has the best brush.

Favourite polish brand?

This is a tough question! My favorites right now are butter LONDON, Essence, Barry M and Catrice.

Favourite indie brand?

I have 2 top Indies that I love, Sonoma Nail Polish and HARE polish.

Best luxe brand?

I actually have not tried too many luxe brands. I just bought my first NARS polish, but I haven’t used it yet. I do love butter LONDON.

Best bargain buy?

Fabulous price and awesome formula!

Favorite colour?

Favorite colour combinations?

Black and white

Best color for school?

I think any color works for school, including nail art.

Best color for work?

This question depends on your job. I am a teacher and can wear whatever color I want. Some jobs, such as office work, may require something more subtle like a nude or pink.

Best party color?

What colour did you wear on your wedding day?

I wore OPI Matched Luggage

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Make sure the cap in on, don’t leave it sitting out, keep it in a cool, dry place…like a Helmer.

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

I love stamping. There are so many fun and interesting design that can be created using stamps.

3D Glitter Feature nail - Nail Romance

For those of you who love nail art, but don’t have the time or patience to do all 10 fingers, a feature nail is your style secret.

It’s so quick and easy to do just one nail and it makes your mani really stand out.

3D Glitter Feature nail YSL polish - Nail Romance

Rose Gold Glitter 3D Nail Art Feature Nail

3D nails are a huge trend for 2013. Glitterbug is a new product from the darlings at Hello Darling and is a 3D glitter dip for your nails. It’s much easier to use than I was expecting.

  3. Use the anti-static brush that comes with the Glitterbug to pat down the glitter and tidy up around and under your nail.

Do you love a feature nail too?

My Nail Romance with The PolishAholic

The PolishAholic - My Nail Romance
Jen Karr is happily addicted to nail polish and shares her favorite swatches and nail art at The PolishAholic. A reformed nail biter, Jen’s interest in polish started in 2009 when she would purchase new colours as a reward for quitting her nail biting habit. She now has over 2000 polishes! Jen recently collaborated with Picture Polish to release a limited edition PolishAholic nail polish in her favorite emerald green called Mallard. She shares her nail romance below.

Tell me a bit about your blog

The PolishAholic is a resource for swatches and comparisons of the latest nail polish collections along with dashes of nail art and tutorials!

How often do you post?

I typically post 6 times a week Monday-Saturday!

Are you left or right handed?

I’m a righty!

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Go slow, I like to paint my right hand very slowly so I’m less likely to mess up.

How often do you paint your nails?

Usually every 2-3 days. I tend to do everything that is featured on my blog during the weekend when I’m not working my 9-5 job then during the week I wear my favorite polishes.

How many polishes in your collection?

For a while I liked to be blissfully ignorant about the actual number but I made a spreadsheet a while back to avoid rebuying things so unfortunately now it’s easy to figure out how many I own…I think I’m around 2000 bottles (crazy, I know)

How do you store your polishes?

Right now I have 3 Helmers and a 9 drawer Alex, all from Ikea. I need to get another one of them though!

Which brand has the best brush?

I really enjoy the OPI Prowide brush. It’s a nice size for my nails so I’m able to paint my nails quickly.

Favorite polish brand?

That’s a tough question! I love a lot of brands for a lot of different reasons; I love OPI for their crèmes, China Glaze for their range of colors, Zoya for their formula. I could go on haha!

Favorite indie brand?

This is another tough one, I don’t think I could ever pick one but there are a few that I always look forward to getting my hands on. They include Dollish Polish, Girly Bits, Cirque and Enchanted Polish among others!

Best luxe brand?

I don’t own a ton of high end brands, but my favorite of what I do have is Butter London. They have really been putting out amazing polishes this last year, my collection of their polishes has doubled!

Best bargain buy?

Lately it’s been Ulta’s house brand of polish; I bought a lot of their polish when I started getting into nail polish and forgot about them. I’ve been going through and wearing them a lot more recently and they have become favorites. Their polish is already pretty affordable and it’s on sale all the time for buy 2 get 2 free, it doesn’t get much better than that!

Favourite color?

Green, hands down. If I could own every green nail polish ever made I’d be the happiest polishaholic ever.

Favorite color combinations?

I really love cobalt blue and gold together, I’ve worn that combo 4 or 5 times over the last couple months!

Best color for school?

I really think you could wear anything, lord knows I would have been rocking some crazy colors on my nails if I had been into nail polish when I was going to school.

Best color for work?

I’m lucky where I work, I can wear whatever I want but occasionally when I have to be more professional I like wear a nude with a little something special like Cult Nails Crusin Nude.

Best party color?

Anything neon, I like my nails to stand out…it’s a good conversation starter!

What color did you wear on your wedding day?

I’m not married but I imagine I’ll wear something blue like Nails Inc Baker Street.

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Wrap the tips of your nails with everything you are putting on, your base coat, polish and top coat. It will help prevent tip wear!

What’s your favorite nail art trend?

Texture, anything with texture or that gives the illusion of texture…fuzzy nails, striped nails, caviar nails etc…They are always fun to do and I love the way they look!
