Loving… The Blues

Nail Romance - Hello Darling and BYS blue polish

Feeling the blues so this manicure is just the cure.

I’ve used BYS Magnetic Cobalt on my ring finger as a feature nail. While I love the colour and the polish is great, opaque in one coat, I wasn’t really seeing the magnetic effect.

The other blue is Hello Darling L’ete from their new summer collection. This colour goes on a dream and is the perfect azure blue. Hurry as I think this colour is selling fast. You may have spotted some Art Class decals in the background. More nail art fun coming soon.

I love just featuring one nail in a manicure. Just one nail is quick and easy to do and still have fun with your nails. Maybe that’s why it’s Nail Romance instead of Nails Romance?

Do you love a feature nail? Have you tried magnetic polish?

Nailspiration: Emerald Green – Pantone Colour of the Year 2013

Pantone - Emerald - Color of the year 2013 - Nail Romance

Pantone has heralded Emerald as the Colour of the Year for 2013. While I contemplated wearing Pantone emerald green hair on Hair Romance, I think it’s much easier to wear emerald green on your nails.

At the moment I don’t have ANY emerald green nail polish in my collection. How could I be missing such a vital trend colour? I’m sure I won’t have any trouble fixing that issue and here’s some nailspiration to inspire you to try emerald green on your nails.

Are you a fan of the new Pantone Colour of the Year? What’s your favourite emerald green polish?

My Nail Romance with 10 Blank Canvases

10 Blank Canvases - My Nail Romance

Meet Jenny Pasha, the nails behind the nail art blog 10 Blank Canvases. Winner of the Best New Beauty Blog in the UK Cosmopolitan Blog Awards 2012, Jenny has been doing nail art since 2011 and predicts DIY studded and rhinestone nails to be big trends for 2013. Jenny says she “always paint all 10 fingers and that is where the name 10 Blank Canvases comes from. Each nail is a little canvas to be painted on…and when it chips off it just means I have a new blank canvas to start again!”

Tell me a bit about your blog

I have been blogging for just over a year now and it’s a place I can display all my nail art and my inspirations. It started just as a way to show off my nails to friends and family and has developed into a full obsession!

How often do you post?

I post once of twice a week. I’ll post nails soon after I paint them and as I like to keep my designs on for a few days it does limit the amount I post per week.

Are you left or right handed?

I’m right handed, but have always made a point to paint full designs on both nails so as a result am able to paint with both hands now.

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

The problem with painting with your non-dominant hand is steadiness so when I paint with my left hand I rest it on my hand close to the nails to limit the shakiness and try to do quick brush strokes.

How often do you paint your nails?

I paint my nails on average two or three times a week. I will wait until a nail chips or I have a specific event I want to have special nails for to re-do them. I spend so much time painting them it would be a shame to take it off the next day.

How many polishes in your collection?

I don’t have the biggest nail polish collection of all the bloggers I have seen. I probably have around the 200-polish mark, which it still a lot!

How do you store your polishes?

At the moment I am using plastic drawers that I got from Muji, but I have just ordered myself an infamous Helmer set of drawers that most bloggers use as they fit nail polishes perfectly!

Which brand has the best brush?

I think I like the thin Essie or Nails Inc brush the best. I like a thinner brush for more precision.

Favorite polish brand?

At the moment it has to be Nails Inc. They have such a great range of colours and a nice thick formula. Also being a London girl I love the names they give their polishes all places and roads in London.

Best bargain buy?

For cheap colours that are also great quality I always go for Barry M. They have a great range of bright colours and I love their Gold and Silver Foil polishes.

Favourite colour?

It’s got to be sapphire blue. My favorite polish ever is Essie Aruba Blue recently challenged by OPI DS Magic. DS Magic is so sparkly it always makes me smile seeing it on my fingers!!

Favourite colour combinations?

The combination I use most in my nail art is black and gold. It’s such a classic mix and there is so much you can do with it, from a detailed gold lace over a black base to gold studs over a black matte base. Its also great as it will go with any outfit and makes great statement nails for a night out.

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

On your nails, use a good topcoat. I always finish with a layer of Sech Vite. It dries your nails quickly and gives them a glossy shine.

In the bottle, use nail polish thinner when it gets too gloopy. Nails polish thinner, such as Seche Restore, is one of my most used tools! It makes your polishes easier to apply and means you can use every last drop!

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

That’s a tough question as I love so many different types of nail art and am always looking to try out new trends. I love lace or fine detail over any base or even over a nude base. This look can make a statement without being too in your face if subtle colours are used. On the other end of the spectrum I also am a fan of galaxy nails, it combines my favorite colours, purple, black and blue and if done well can give a really great bold look to nails.

Loving…Sparkles and hologram polishes

Make Up Store Greta hologram polish_Nail Romance

Hologram nail polishes, or holos, are so much better in real life. I can’t tell you how long I tried to get an accurate photo of this polish.

I’m wearing Greta, a linear hologram polish from The MakeUp Store. I have to confess I didn’t even know The Make Up Store did nail polishes but they have a surprisingly large range. I was looking at their new candy colours but couldn’t go past this silver hologram. I also purchased Aqua Fix, their recommend base coat for holographic polishes.

To see the true holographic effect, you need a smooth nail base. Aqua Fix is a very good base coat, but any ridge filler will have a similar effect so there’s no need to purchase this if you already have one in your collection. I also like Revitanail Ridge Filler or Butter London Nail Foundation for base coats.

Dots & Stripes Nail Art

BioSculpture nail art

Bio Sculpture nail art

When confronted with so many nail art and nail colour options I asked myself, why do I only have 10 nails?! I couldn’t believe the choice available from Bio Sculpture. With over 170 colours in the range I didn’t know where to start.

I had mistakenly assumed that gel polish could only be applied in one colour but I was amazed by the creativity in those tiny test swatches.

The latest summer colours form the Holiday Beach Collection caught my eye, and I couldn’t choose between Coral Cove (132) and Isla del Sol (133) so I picked both. It was the same with dots and stripes. Again, why choose when you can have both! Plus a little heart just for my Nail Romance.

My mind is already planning my next nail art. What would you go for? Sequins? Studs? Feathers? Lace? The only limit is your imagination.

Let Them Have Polish - My Nail Romance

Meet Cristina of Let them have Polish. She says she’s a “firm believer in the power of feeling good about yourself” and her positive energy jumps off the pages of her blog.

Tell me a bit about your blog

It all started as the result of an illness and an inability to work. I needed something to stay busy/ connected and nail polish became my outlet. I started by posting my manicure pictures on my personal FB page and the response from my friends was a positive one. The idea of starting a blog about my polished adventures came from my husband. He has been very supportive of the whole thing since day one. Anyhow, I did a ton of research as I had no idea what a blog even was…. I was captivated by the community and decided that I had to be a part of it. After three days I finally landed on a blog name, and so www.letthemhavepolish.com was born.

How often do you post?

I post EVERY.DAY. And I have been blogging since August of 2010. It’s a sickness lol. Actually the only time I do not post is when I am sick.

Are you left or right handed?

Right Handed

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Keep a light hand and let the brush do all the work. Also be patient and practice a lot!

How often do you paint your nails?

EVERY.DAY… It is definitely a sickness haha.

How many polishes in your collection?

1,284… Precisely.

How do you store your polishes?

I have a total of six wall racks. Three of them hold 90 bottles, three hold 60. I get my racks from www.transdesign.com . I also have Two Ikea Helmers, just about, full of polish.

Which brand has the best brush?

I think I have to give it to O.P.I on this one. That Pro-Wide brush makes everything so easy!

Favourite polish brand?

I can’t ever really answer this question because every brand has their strenghths (and weaknesses). I love many brands for many different reasons. For example, Zoya always releases beautiful, cohesive seasonal collections. O.P.I always knows how to do red the right way. China Glaze is my go-to for bright colors and fun, playful Seasonal Collections and Puerto Rican brand Bettina has my heart when it comes to nail art. I could go on and on but you get the point. I could never choose a favorite brand.

Favourite indie brand?

There you go again with that word…. Hahaha I am a big fan of Cult Nails. I am happy to call Maria a friend and I love what she is doing with the brand. Also, have you seen their latest collection; Behind Closed Doors?! It is AMAZING.

Best luxe brand?

I have to give it to Illamasqua here. It should be pretty obvious why..; )

Best bargain buy?

I really like Wet ‘n’ Wild polishes (Actually all their products are pretty amazing!)

Favourite colour?

All the colors you can see on a peacock’s tail feather!

Favourite colour combinations?

For some reason I am really into Purple and Green lately…

Best colour for school?

I don’t go to school but if I did, I’d be in college… So I’d wear whatever I want! Hahah The louder, the better.

Best colour for work?

Butter London All Hail the Queen. Amazing shade of sandy nude with holographic shimmer? Yes, please!

Best party colour?

Anything Neon or Glitter. Or both combined!

What colour would / did you wear on your wedding day?

I don’t remember the name but I wore an old O.P.I vampy Red with some subtle Black and White wispy decorations. Back then I wasn’t into doing my own nails, they were done at a salon. Thankfully, I had grown out all the damage from acrylics and actually wore my own natural shorties on my wedding.

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Store it up-right. Keep the cap screwed on tight when ever you are not using it. Make sure it is away from direct Sunlight and in a cool place. Also, DO NOT PUT ACETONE IN IT. If the polish is getting thick, put a few drops of polish thinner in it. This can be found at Sally’s or Ulta.

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

Hhhmmm…. I am really into gradient nails, stripes, dots and the beautiful Gold Flakes that some companies have been coming out with.

Indie Nail Polish

Indie nail polish swatches by Temptalia

Curious about indie nail polishes?

“Indie” refers to smaller, independent nail polish brands with smaller distribution. It’s a broad term as it ranges from craft producers on Etsy to niche brands such as Cult Nails.

If you’d like to learn more, head over to Temptalia to read Christine’s great overview of this beauty category and a whole heap of swatches.

My Nail Romance with Adventures in Acetone

Adventures In Acetone is a nail blog full of indie swatches and cute nail art. The nails behind the blog belong to 26 year old Jacki, a wife and mom of two who wakes up hours early just to paint her nails.

Tell me a bit about your blog

Adventures In Acetone is a nail art blog with a lot of indie brands (and some mainstream polishes) swatches thrown into the mix as well. It started out as a hobby for me a year and a half ago when my husband was deployed to Afghanistan in the US Army and has turned into a huge part of my life now. I’ve met some amazing people in the nail art community and am so glad I decided to start my blog!

How often do you post?

A few times a week. Sometimes it will be each day, and other weeks are too busy around here to even change up my nails more than twice a week. (I have a 4 1/2 year old and a 4 month old so nails only happen in the early mornings for me or after they’ve gone to bed for the night.)

Are you left or right handed?

Right!

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Practice, patience, and good cleanup! Honestly, I could barely paint my nails on my right hand without making a huge mess and now there is barely a difference in the two. I always use an angled brush dipped in acetone to clean up the edges on both hands.

How often do you paint your nails?

I tend to go a little crazy if I have on the same polish for more than a few days.

How many polishes in your collection?

As of today, 424.

How do you store your polishes?

2 “melmer” systems. Basically, they are three-drawer units from Michaels craft store meant to hold scrapbook paper but the height of the drawers are perfect for polish bottles to stand up in!

Which brand has the best brush?

Oh, good one! I really like the wider and flatter brush by OPI but the smaller brushes in Zoya, China Glaze, etc, are easier for nail art.

Favourite polish brand?

Zoya!

Favourite indie brand?

Oh man, this is a hard one! I have so many that I love! Please don’t make me answer!! lol

Favourite colour?

I tend to gravitate more toward aquas, teals, blues, periwinkles and purples.

Favourite colour combinations?

Aqua and pink, purple and teal, but there are a lot of combinations that I’m trying and liking all the time! That’s one of my favorite things about nail art—I am constantly trying to decide which colors would look best in a look I have in mind.

What colour did you wear on your wedding day?

I got married 7 years ago, during my acrylic nail phase. (Cringing and never wanting to damage my natural nails like that again) So for the wedding I had a classic French manicure.

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

Gradients right now!
