Gwen Stafani for OPI

Gwen Stefani for OPI nail polish

It does not get much better than this.

My hair idol, Gwen Stefani is about to become my nail idol too.

Gwen has partnered with OPI to create a limited edition punk-inspired nail polish collection featuring seven shades: Hey Baby, I Sing in Color, Love.Angel.Music.Baby., 4 in the Morning, In True Stefani Fashion, Push and Shove and Over & Over A-Gwen.

I can’t wait to try them! Unfortunately, I will have to wait til January. I guess the Mariah Carey holiday collection will have to get me through until then.

Are you a fan of celeb collaborations? Will Gwen’s collection be the one to change your mind?

NYFW Nail trends to try right now

It’s no surprise (to me, anyway) that nail art is one of the biggest beauty trend of New York Fashion Week.

Here’s Nail Romance’s pick of the biggest nail trends to try right now.

Matching Tips & Lips

NYFW nail trends to try now - Matching tips and lips

Kate Moss says it’s a no-no to match your lipstick to your nails, but Zac Posen and several designers others disagree. Oxblood lips and tips are a huge trend for Fall 2013. Try Essie Carry On, as seen at Zac Posen, Essie Bordeaux as seen at Wes Gordon or Butter London Las Moss, as seen at Dannijo.

Nude Nails

Alexander-Wang NYFW nails

Keep it chic and simple with a classic nude nail. This trend is so easy to wear, and is perfect if you’re not so great at painting your nails. Try Essie Lady Like, as seen at Caroline Herrera, Essie Sand Tropez as seen at 3.1 Phillip Lim or OPI’s San Tan-tonio as seen at Jason Wu. Also spotted backstage at Dannijo was Butter London Yummy Mummy, one of my fave nude polishes. The nails for Alexander Wang were cread by CND and have a worn, feathered texture.

Matte Nails

NYFW nail trends to try now - Matte Black Nails

Tone it down for fall with a matte finish. Not only does a matte topcoat allow you to play with textures, you can get a totally different finish to your favorite polish. Matte was paired with black at Nonoo, while models wore Black Onyx by OPI with a matte top coat at BCBG.

Combine this matte polish trend with nude nails for an uber-chic finish. Matte nude nails were seen at The Row, Helmut Lang and DKNY.

Reverse Moons

NYFW nail trends to try now - Reverse Moon manicures

Reverse moons are a simple two step nail art you can take straight from the runway. How stunning is the La Perla manicure featuring nude nails in Butter London Yummy Mummy and a black moon using Union Jack Black. Or try the black and silver reverse moon manicure at Mara Hoffman. Veronica Beard took it one step further with Essie All tied up on the moon, then two coats of Brownie Points and finished on the tip with Berry Hard.

Swirled Nails at Rebecca Minkoff

NYFW nail trends to try now - Rebecca Minkoff Nail Art

Inspired by the night sky, the nails at the Rebecca Minkoff presentation also have an oil slick quality to them. Recreate the look by applying each shade in small dots, starting with the darkest shade. Finish the look by swirling the colors together with a thin paintbrush and a layer of top coat. Colors used were Essie As Gold as it Gets, Penny Talk, Go Overboard, Blue Rhapsody and Aruba Blue.

My Nail Romance with Lab Muffin

Lab Muffin - My Nail Romance

One blog isn’t enough to contain Michelle Wong’s Nail Romance. In addition to her main beauty blog, Lab Muffin, she contributes to Polish or Perish and is a founding member of the new nail community Lacquerheads of Oz. Michelle has almost finished her PhD in chemistry and when she’s not busy blogging, she’s slogging away at her thesis or in the pole dance studio.

Tell me a bit about your blog

I started Lab Muffin in December 2011, mainly because my boyfriend was sick of seeing my nails (and nowhere near appreciative enough)! I’m also passionate about science literacy, and was disappointed in how badly beauty science is communicated, leading to so many myths and misunderstandings. So Lab Muffin is my attempt to make a little difference in the world by helping ordinary girls wade through marketing jargon, while making everyone check out my nails!

To give people a rest, I started posting swatches on Polish or Perish, an international blog run by “women with almost as much polish as they do education” – we all have or are working towards higher degrees.

Recently, a group of Aussie nail bloggers, nail techs, polish makers and other enthusiasts started Lacquerheads of Oz, which will gather all the nail polish knowledge out there, both for experts and girls just starting out, into one handy website. I’m very excited to be involved!

How often do you post?

5-7 times a week these days across the three blogs… a bit of a hectic schedule but I love it 🙂

Are you left or right handed?

Right-handed.

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

I’m a bit ambidextrous from piano so it’s not too bad, but resting both wrists or elbows on a hard object makes it easier. And practice, of course!

How often do you paint your nails?

Every 3-5 days – I find that my nails tend to chip if they aren’t protected by a shield of polish.

How many polishes in your collection?

I put them all in a Google spreadsheet recently – under 400 not including doubles. Don’t tell the boyfriend.

How do you store your polishes?

I have that hallmark of a polish addict: the IKEA Helmer. I have one drawer each for cremes, shimmers, special finishes, toppers, base and top coats, and the dreaded untrieds. The boyfriend has said that he’ll leave me when I run out of space in it.

Which brand has the best brush?

Funnily enough, so far it’s been Bio Sculpture, who aren’t usually known for their polishes! I swatched four in a row without getting even the slightest drop on my skin – a first.

Favourite polish brand?

All of them! It’s hard for me to say but OPI, China Glaze and Essie have great ranges and hardly ever disappoint.

Favourite indie brand?

So hard to choose out of my favourite Aussies: Gloss ‘n Sparkle, Emily de Molly, Femme Fatale, Loki’s Lacquer and Pretty Serious! So I won’t 😛

Best luxe brand?

Chanel shades are always very covetable! Butter London is also amazing.

Best bargain buy?

ulta3 and Essence are great value for money.

Favourite colour?

Purple, coral and green, and teal! Especially teal.

Favourite colour combinations?

Purple and gold is always a winner!

Best colour for work?

Neutrals – brown and nude are nice, worksafe colours.

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Use a good base coat, and use a top coat that isn’t quick-dry. I use Orly Bonder as my base coat, and while I love Seche Vite top coat, I don’t recommend it if you want your nails to stay chip-free for longer than a couple of days.

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

I love bold designs, so tape manicures – they’re amazing for getting crisp lines!

My Nail Romance with A Girl and Her Polish

A Girl and Her Polish - My Nail Romance

Meet Katee Baum, the nails behind A Girl and Her Polish. She is a self-proclaimed nail polish-oholic and shares swatches and nail art, including tutorials on her blog.

Tell me a bit about your blog

I started blogging about my adventures in nail polish a year ago and I love it! On my blog, A Girl and Her Polish, I share my nail art and review nail polish. I am a complete novice and have never had any sort of training. Everything I do is about my love of nail polish. I show step-by-step techniques so that you at home can recreate my designs and my nail polish reviews give my honest opinion so you don’t waste your time with bad polish!

How often do you post?

I post at least once a day, although some days I have posted a couple times.

Are you left or right handed?

I am right handed.

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Take your time and don’t rush it. If you do make a mistake you can always go back and clean it up.

How often do you paint your nails?

It depends on what I am involved with. If I am doing a few challenges I can change my polish everyday, or a couple times a day. On average I probably change my polish at the least, 4 times a week.

How many polishes in your collection?

I have 836 bottles of polish.

How do you store your polishes?

All of my polish is stored in 2 Helmers from Ikea.

Which brand has the best brush?

I have small nail beds, so I tend to like the littler brushes better. I think butter LONDON has the best brush.

Favourite polish brand?

This is a tough question! My favorites right now are butter LONDON, Essence, Barry M and Catrice.

Favourite indie brand?

I have 2 top Indies that I love, Sonoma Nail Polish and HARE polish.

Best luxe brand?

I actually have not tried too many luxe brands. I just bought my first NARS polish, but I haven’t used it yet. I do love butter LONDON.

Best bargain buy?

Fabulous price and awesome formula!

Favorite colour?

White

Favorite colour combinations?

Black and white

Best color for school?

I think any color works for school, including nail art.

Best color for work?

This question depends on your job. I am a teacher and can wear whatever color I want. Some jobs, such as office work, may require something more subtle like a nude or pink.

Best party color?

Glitter!

What colour did you wear on your wedding day?

I wore OPI Matched Luggage

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Make sure the cap in on, don’t leave it sitting out, keep it in a cool, dry place…like a Helmer.

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

I love stamping. There are so many fun and interesting design that can be created using stamps.

My Nail Romance with Cosmetic Cupcake

Cosmetic Cupcake is an Australian beauty blog featuring some of the cutest nail art around. Meet blogger Michelle and learn some of her polish favourites as she shares her Nail Romance.

Tell me a bit about your blog

I’m Michelle and I’m from Sydney, Australia. I’m a Registered Nurse by day and a beauty addict the rest of the time! I started reading blogs late 2009 and I decided to start my own in February 2010 as a way to unwind from the craziness that was fulltime work and study. Polishing my nails and sharing a love of beauty with the blogging community has helped keep me sane over the last 2 years.

How often do you post?

I try to post about 5 times a week but unfortunately recently I’ve dropped off to only about 2 or 3 times a week due to work, wedding planning and general life stuff. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick up my normal schedule again soon!

Are you left or right handed?

I’m right handed.

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Practise is the key! Also it’s important to steady your non-dominant hand while painting and to take your time.

How often do you paint your nails?

Usually I paint my nails about every second day and when I’m stressed out its daily!

How many polishes in your collection?

I have about 900 polishes currently in my stash.

How do you store your polishes?

I use an IKEA Helmer and I desperately need another! I’ve got plastic containers filled with polish all over my room at the moment.

Which brand has the best brush?

I think it would have to be OPI with their Pro-Wide brush. My nail beds are huge and the brush gives such an even, perfect coverage for me in 3 easy strokes.

Favourite polish brand?

This is a really tough one as I love lots of brands but China Glaze steals my heart the most. I love their colour range, the awesome formula and the price point is so reasonable even with the crazy Aussie markups. I really like the shape of their bottles too!

Favourite indie brand?

I really resisted buying indie polish because I knew that once I went down the indie path I would go crazy trying different brands. The brand that made me take the first step was Lynderella and it has to be my favorite too. I don’t give a hoot about the drama surrounding the polishes and just appreciate the fact that they’re awesome glitters.

Best luxe brand?

There are so many luxe brands I love but Rescue Beauty Lounge is my favourite. The formula is out of this world and worth every penny. RBL is followed closely by Deborah Lippmann and Anna Sui.

Best bargain buy?

Ulta 3 and they’re an Aussie brand too yay!

Favourite colour?

I love pink but I wear all colours!

Favourite colour combinations?

I love the way gold and pink, purple and silver look together.

Best colour for school?

I was never allowed nail polish when I was in school but I would have worn pastels and brights. Something fun!

Best colour for work?

I’m so fortunate that my Nurse Manager lets me get away with wearing crazy nail art and every colour under the sun at work. However, if I worked in a corporate environment I would probably go with nudes and pinks but with a twist – think a subtle holographic such as Butter London All Hail The Queen, Glitter Gal Frappe or Catherine Arley 670 (a really pale pin). I’d also add some subtle nail art such as floral stamping using white or gold.

Best party colour?

Nothing starts a party quite like GLITTER! My go to is any of the glitters from Deborah Lippmann or Milani Jewel FX.

What colour would you wear on your wedding day?

My wedding is in less than 6 months and I haven’t decided yet! Most probably a pink with shimmer as I bought the nail polishes from the Jill Stuart Bridal collection ages ago and I’ll be wearing a combination of the polishes on the day.

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Topcoat and sealing your tips. It makes a big difference!

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

I adore all types of nail art and I can’t have a manicure without it. My favourite would probably have to be glitter gradient manicures as they look fantastic but are super easy and don’t take long to do at all.

My Nail Romance with Chalkboard Nails

Meet Sarah of Chalkboard Nails, the nails behind those fabulous swatches you’ve seen all over Pinterest.

Tell me a bit about your blog

Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m 23 years old and I live in Arizona. I started blogging in July 2011 and have loved every moment of it! Chalkboard Nails started out as a way to document my attempts at nail art. Now, it has grown into a resource for many different areas of nail art, and swatches as well! I try to post manicures of different skill levels to help make nail art more accessible to everyone. I also like to cover a lot of indie polish swatches to support the independent polish makers who don’t necessarily have a huge advertising budget.

How often do you post?

Usually 5-7 times per week. I produce a lot of content! I do try to post a mix of post types, though, so it doesn’t get repetitive.

Are you left or right handed?

I am right handed.

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

When painting with your non-dominant hand, I find it works best if you stabilize the pinky or wrist of that hand on a solid surface, like the table you’re working on. You can still move your hand around enough to paint, but it will give you a solid anchor point. For nail art, if I’ve done something super complicated on my left hand, I will often do a simplified version of the design on my right hand. There’s no shame in that!

How often do you paint your nails?

Usually daily! Occasionally I will go two or three days between manicures.

How many polishes in your collection?

Can I plead the Fifth here? Just kidding! I have somewhere around nine hundred polishes.

How do you store your polishes?

I keep my babies in two super sexy red Helmer drawer units from IKEA. I am coming close to needing a third, though!

Which brand has the best brush?

Great question, because I’m very opinionated about this! I think OPI’s ProWide brush is absolutely the greatest thing ever. While I’ve heard of it being too wide for some people, it’s perfect for my nail width and shape.

Favourite polish brand?

This is a tough one. I think I would have to give it to OPI again because of the brush and their fantastic formula. They’ve also been coming out with some really great and unique shades lately!

Favourite indie brand?

Oh man, this is the hardest question of all. The great thing about indies is that the market is so wide. That means that pretty much everyone can find something to fall in love with! I guess if I was forced to make a decision I would say Sonoma Nail Art. I am also a big fan of Pretty & Polished, Happy Hands Nail Polish, Lush Lacquer, and Cirque Colors.

Best luxe brand?

My favorite luxury brand is butter LONDON, though to be fair I haven’t tried that many high-end polishes. I would love to try Dior, Chanel, or NARS for example, but have a bit of a tight grip on my wallet. butter LONDON provides ultra high quality lacquers at a price point that’s on the lower side of the luxury spectrum.

Best bargain buy?

I’ve gotta go with Wet N Wild. I love their limited edition collections and they have a solid and inexpensive core line, too.

Favourite colour?

I really like the way that lime green polishes look with my skintone.

Favourite colour combinations?

I love pairing bright colors with grey. Some of my favorite grey buddies include hot pink, bright blue, and chartreuse.

Best colour for school?

I was actually never into polish while I was still in school! If I was, I probably would have gone on wearing the exact same stuff I do now like crazy nail art, neons, neutrals, glitter, pastels, brights…

Best colour for work?

My favorite nude for my skin tone is OPI Don’t Pretzel My Buttons, but it’s also possible to be work appropriate and still wear nail art! I suggest trying a nude to white gradient for a fresh twist on the plain old French manicure. You can also adapt many nail art designs for the office by using nudes, neutrals, pinks, and whites. Subtle leopard print? Awww yeahhhh.

Best party colour?

I’d go with anything that has an insane amount of sparkle, like China Glaze Glistening Snow or Zoya Aurora.

What colour would you wear on your wedding day?

I would love to do an intricate white lace nail art design over a naked nail base. I would also wear a pretty lavender like American Apparel L’Esprit.

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

BASE COAT! Most lacquer lovers already wear it, but many casual nail painters think it’s a skippable step. It’s totally not! Base coat can be the difference between a day and a week of unchipped polish. I personally love CND Stickey but different products may work better for others.

What’s your favourite nail art trend?

I’d have to say gradients. They are so versatile. You can wear them alone or work them into a number of other nail art styles effortlessly.

Thanks so much for sharing your Nail Romance Sarah!
