Meet Canadian blogger, Kayla Shevonne. Starting out as a beauty blogger led Kayla to find her true passion – nails. She has since studied to become a professional manicurist and shares swatches and nail art almost every day on her site, Nails by Kayla Shevonne.
Tell me a bit about your blog
Nails by Kayla Shevonne started out as a hobby and has become a huge part of my life! And it has evolved immensely over the almost 3 years that it’s been around. Some readers might not know this, but NbKS actually started out as a general beauty site! “Beauty by Kayla Shevonne” featured primarily makeup related posts such as makeup reviews, swatches, etc. However, after becoming immersed in the beauty community, I quickly realized that my true passion is for nails and nail art. So, Nails by Kayla Shevonne was born!
How often do you post?
I strive to post once per day, but sometimes life just gets in the way. Realistically, I’d say that I post 5 times every week on average.
Are you left or right handed?
I’m a righty.
What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?
Practice, practice, practice! Seriously. Practice. When I first started out doing nail art on my non-dominant hand, it looked atrocious. But over time, I’ve adapted and now I find it much easier.
How often do you paint your nails?
Typically I change my polish every 2-3 days.
How many polishes in your collection?
The last time I counted, it was nearing 1500. No judgment, please! Haha!
How do you store your polishes?
I use what we call “Melmers” to store my polish! They’re actually a craft storage system from Michael’s Arts & Craft Stores and they resemble the popular “Helmer” from IKEA. I have 10 of those in my polish room right now, but I’m thinking I might need to expand once again. Eeek!
Which brand has the best brush?
My nails aren’t particularly wide, so I’ve always preferred the standard sized brushes from brands such as China Glaze, Zoya, Illamasqua, etc.
Favorite polish brand?
This is probably the toughest question here to answer! There are things I love about so many brands, but I suppose that if I had to choose one, it would be China Glaze. I love their brush, their HUGE variety of shades and of course, their affordability.
Favorite indie brand?
KBShimmer. Hands down. There’s something about the way the creator puts her polishes together that just makes me want every.single.one.
Best luxe brand?
Another hands down winner in this category: Illamasqua. I love their formula, they always release new and interesting shades and I love seeing them push the boundaries with their shade names.
Best bargain buy?
Hmm, probably Wet ‘n’ Wild. They’re super affordable and still manage to stay on trend.
Favorite color?
I typically stick within the cooler shade range, and my favourite of all would be turquoise.
Favorite color combinations?
Nude and black is a classic combination that always looks stunning, in my opinion.
What color would / did you wear on your wedding day?
I’ll be wearing OPI It’s My Year. My fiancé proposed to me using nail polish and that’s the one he used, so it’ll definitely be the one I wear on the big day.
Best tip for making nail polish last longer?
When painting, always make sure to cap the free edge of the nail with polish. This cuts down on chips and makes your mani last a whole lot longer.
What’s your favorite nail art trend?
I wouldn’t say that it’s necessarily a trend, but I LOVE wearing animal prints on my nails. Leopard, zebra, you name it, I love it.
What’s your favorite nail art design?
I participated in the 31 Day Challenge back in September 2012. Basically, for 31 days, I posted a different nail art look each day based on a pre-set theme. On day 27, the assigned theme was “Inspired by Art”. I chose a painting I found through Pinterest and mimicked it on my nails.
