Loving…Kit x Gorman

Kit x Gorman collaboration - nail polish and stickers

My cheat secret to easy nail art are nail stickers and I’m loving the new collaboration between Kit and Gorman.

Gorman is an Australian fashion label known for their unique and fun prints and they translate perfectly to nail art. Combined with a select range of nail polishes, this pint sized collection is perfectly formed.

The stickers come in a pack of 20 strips for $9.95 and have a more elastic texture than other strips I’ve used. Take care placing them on your nails as they can stretch out of shape. To remove them you just peel them off. Top coat will make them last longer.

My Nail Romance with Kayla Shevonne

Nails by Kayla Shevonne - My Nail Romance

Meet Canadian blogger, Kayla Shevonne. Starting out as a beauty blogger led Kayla to find her true passion – nails. She has since studied to become a professional manicurist and shares swatches and nail art almost every day on her site, Nails by Kayla Shevonne.

Tell me a bit about your blog

Nails by Kayla Shevonne started out as a hobby and has become a huge part of my life! And it has evolved immensely over the almost 3 years that it’s been around. Some readers might not know this, but NbKS actually started out as a general beauty site! “Beauty by Kayla Shevonne” featured primarily makeup related posts such as makeup reviews, swatches, etc. However, after becoming immersed in the beauty community, I quickly realized that my true passion is for nails and nail art. So, Nails by Kayla Shevonne was born!

How often do you post?

I strive to post once per day, but sometimes life just gets in the way. Realistically, I’d say that I post 5 times every week on average.

Are you left or right handed?

I’m a righty.

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Practice, practice, practice! Seriously. Practice. When I first started out doing nail art on my non-dominant hand, it looked atrocious. But over time, I’ve adapted and now I find it much easier.

How often do you paint your nails?

Typically I change my polish every 2-3 days.

How many polishes in your collection?

The last time I counted, it was nearing 1500. No judgment, please! Haha!

How do you store your polishes?

I use what we call “Melmers” to store my polish! They’re actually a craft storage system from Michael’s Arts & Craft Stores and they resemble the popular “Helmer” from IKEA. I have 10 of those in my polish room right now, but I’m thinking I might need to expand once again. Eeek!

Which brand has the best brush?

My nails aren’t particularly wide, so I’ve always preferred the standard sized brushes from brands such as China Glaze, Zoya, Illamasqua, etc.

Favorite polish brand?

This is probably the toughest question here to answer! There are things I love about so many brands, but I suppose that if I had to choose one, it would be China Glaze. I love their brush, their HUGE variety of shades and of course, their affordability.

Favorite indie brand?

KBShimmer. Hands down. There’s something about the way the creator puts her polishes together that just makes me want every.single.one.

Best luxe brand?

Another hands down winner in this category: Illamasqua. I love their formula, they always release new and interesting shades and I love seeing them push the boundaries with their shade names.

Best bargain buy?

Hmm, probably Wet ‘n’ Wild. They’re super affordable and still manage to stay on trend.

Favorite color?

I typically stick within the cooler shade range, and my favourite of all would be turquoise.

Favorite color combinations?

Nude and black is a classic combination that always looks stunning, in my opinion.

What color would / did you wear on your wedding day?

I’ll be wearing OPI It’s My Year. My fiancé proposed to me using nail polish and that’s the one he used, so it’ll definitely be the one I wear on the big day.

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

When painting, always make sure to cap the free edge of the nail with polish. This cuts down on chips and makes your mani last a whole lot longer.

What’s your favorite nail art trend?

I wouldn’t say that it’s necessarily a trend, but I LOVE wearing animal prints on my nails. Leopard, zebra, you name it, I love it.

What’s your favorite nail art design?

I participated in the 31 Day Challenge back in September 2012. Basically, for 31 days, I posted a different nail art look each day based on a pre-set theme. On day 27, the assigned theme was “Inspired by Art”. I chose a painting I found through Pinterest and mimicked it on my nails.

DIY Macadamia Oil Hand and Cuticle Treatment

Nail Romance - Hello Darling Nails - DIY cuticle treatment

Do you suffer from dry or irritated cuticles? Try this easy and natural DIY nail treatment that will leave your hands and cuticles feeling soft and smooth.

This treatment comes from the fabulous Heather of Hello Darling nail polish. I was chatting on Instagram with Kim-Marie about cuticles and Heather suggested this fabulous DIY treatment which I tried immediately and I can attest it really works.

What you need

  • Macadamia oil
  • Powderless latex gloves

You can find macadamia oil at the supermarket or health food store. It’s also great in salad dressings.

Make sure you check the gloves that they are powder free. You can find boxes of disposable gloves at the pharmacy or drugstore.

DIY Macadamia Oil Hand and Cuticle Treatment

  1. Gently warm around 1/2 cup of macadamia oil on the stove or in the microwave.
  2. Pour the oil into your gloves and ensure it is equally distributed.
  3. Put your hands in the gloves for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Discard gloves and wash your hands in warm water.
  5. Enjoy your soft, delicious smelling hands.

Treatment tips

  • Go to the bathroom before doing this treatment. You want to relax and enjoy the hand treatment!
  • Place a small towel on your lap to protect your clothes in case any oil comes out of the gloves.
  • Gently massage your fingertips while wearing the gloves. This feels nice and makes sure all the oil is distributed to your nails.

What’s your trick for keeping your cuticles soft? Do you do any DIY hand treatments?

My Nail Romance with Dressed Up Nails

Dressed Up Nails - My Nail Romance

Meet Whitney of Dressed Up Nails. I think I first discovered Whitney’s nail art on Instagram and since then I kept spotting it all over Pinterest too. Whitney’s fun style of hand-painted nail art is inspiring. Come find out about the blogger behind the nails.

Tell me a bit about your blog

Hey y’all! I’m Whitney. I’m 27 but inside I’ll probably always be 11. I have lot of enthusiasm for things like nail polish, nail art, talking about nail polish and nail art, reading, 2-hour baths, glitter, unicorns, soft pants, my lady dog, camping, Scrabble, crafting, organization, brunch, and not leaving my house unless absolutely necessary. I think that nail art holds my interest so well because there is just SO MUCH to it. I feel like there is always something new I can do, a new pattern or design or color combination or nail shape or polish collection coming out to squee over. I can see a lot of improvement in my nail art skillz from when I started, which is really fun, but I also feel like there is SO MUCH I can keep improving and learning and doing, which is so cool. I also really love having a blog and all the social-media-y places that allow me to meet other people who are obsessed with this like I am. I think that’s the very best part.

How often do you post?

Depends on the week but anywhere from 1-5+ times… I’d say average is probably 2-3.

Are you left or right handed?

Right handed

What’s your best tip for painting your other hand?

Go sloooooow! This is the tip I give everyone who asks me how to paint with your non-dominant hand. You’d be surprised how well you can do if you just slow way down and paint really carefully. I also like to do simpler variations of designs on my right hand as well.

How often do you paint your nails?

Like my blog posting, it varies week by week – sometimes I paint them once and sometimes I paint them every day. On average I probably paint them 3-4 times a week.

How many polishes in your collection?

I refuse to count but I think I probably have a little over 400 at this point >_<

How do you store your polishes?

I made two wall racks out of foam board that hold about half my polish and I bought a little wire drawer set at IKEA that holds most of the rest. My *super special* and favorite polishes live on a bamboo spice rack on my desk. One day I want them all on wall racks!

Which brand has the best brush?

OPI. I also really like the Revlon Colorstay brushes.

Favorite polish brand?

China Glaze, hands down. I’m such a China Glaze fangirl it’s ridiculous, I think ¼ of my polishes are ChG.

Favorite indie brand?

Right now it’s definitely Shimmer Polish, I just received Cindy’s entire collection in the mail a month or so ago and they are all SO PRETTY.

Favorite color?

My favorite color has been teal/turquoise for a long time, but I have a pretty big love affair with purple on my nails, too.

Favorite color combinations?

Blue and pink is my all-time favorite to use.

What color would you wear on your wedding day?

I’m probably going to wear some kind of awesome nail art on my wedding day. Definitely not going too demure with my nails, they’ve become one of the biggest parts of my appearance at this point!

Best tip for making nail polish last longer?

Keep it closed tightly and if it gets thick and gloopy, use polish thinner to thin it out – NEVER polish remover or acetone!

What’s your favorite nail art trend?

Glitter gradients will always be my truest nail art love. I never get tired of them. I also really like painting geometric patterns and hearts on my nails.

NYFW Nail trends to try right now

It’s no surprise (to me, anyway) that nail art is one of the biggest beauty trend of New York Fashion Week.

Here’s Nail Romance’s pick of the biggest nail trends to try right now.

Matching Tips & Lips

NYFW nail trends to try now - Matching tips and lips

Kate Moss says it’s a no-no to match your lipstick to your nails, but Zac Posen and several designers others disagree. Oxblood lips and tips are a huge trend for Fall 2013. Try Essie Carry On, as seen at Zac Posen, Essie Bordeaux as seen at Wes Gordon or Butter London Las Moss, as seen at Dannijo.

Nude Nails

Alexander-Wang NYFW nails

Keep it chic and simple with a classic nude nail. This trend is so easy to wear, and is perfect if you’re not so great at painting your nails. Try Essie Lady Like, as seen at Caroline Herrera, Essie Sand Tropez as seen at 3.1 Phillip Lim or OPI’s San Tan-tonio as seen at Jason Wu. Also spotted backstage at Dannijo was Butter London Yummy Mummy, one of my fave nude polishes. The nails for Alexander Wang were cread by CND and have a worn, feathered texture.

Matte Nails

NYFW nail trends to try now - Matte Black Nails

Tone it down for fall with a matte finish. Not only does a matte topcoat allow you to play with textures, you can get a totally different finish to your favorite polish. Matte was paired with black at Nonoo, while models wore Black Onyx by OPI with a matte top coat at BCBG.

Combine this matte polish trend with nude nails for an uber-chic finish. Matte nude nails were seen at The Row, Helmut Lang and DKNY.

Reverse Moons

NYFW nail trends to try now - Reverse Moon manicures

Reverse moons are a simple two step nail art you can take straight from the runway. How stunning is the La Perla manicure featuring nude nails in Butter London Yummy Mummy and a black moon using Union Jack Black. Or try the black and silver reverse moon manicure at Mara Hoffman. Veronica Beard took it one step further with Essie All tied up on the moon, then two coats of Brownie Points and finished on the tip with Berry Hard.

Swirled Nails at Rebecca Minkoff

NYFW nail trends to try now - Rebecca Minkoff Nail Art

Inspired by the night sky, the nails at the Rebecca Minkoff presentation also have an oil slick quality to them. Recreate the look by applying each shade in small dots, starting with the darkest shade. Finish the look by swirling the colors together with a thin paintbrush and a layer of top coat. Colors used were Essie As Gold as it Gets, Penny Talk, Go Overboard, Blue Rhapsody and Aruba Blue.

Valentine’s Day Nail Art Tutorial – Bows and hearts

Nail Romance - Valentines Day Mani - Hello darling transfers

Looking for a way to pretty up your nails for Valentine’s Day? Try nail transfers to update your manicure in minutes.

You don’t need to have a steady hand for this easy nail art. With so many designs available you can pretend you spent hours painting your nails with these simple transfers.

Valentine’s Day Nail Art Tutorial

Nail Romance Tutorial - How to use nail transfers

Start by painting your nail in your base colour. Allow 15 minutes to dry before applying nail transfers for the best results. My nails are painted in this pink-red ombre manicure.

What you need:

How to use nail transfers:

  1. Cut the transfer to fit your nail.
  2. Use tweezers to place the transfer in water for a few seconds. If it starts to sink you’ve left it too long. You just need to dampen the backing paper.
  3. Place the transfer on your nail and let the backing paper slip away. You can reposition the transfer while it’s still damp. Then press it down to remove any air bubbles or creases.
  4. Repeat for each nail and finish with a top coat to seal the transfer in place.

Shredded Heart Nails – Valentine’s Day Manicure

Nail Romance - Shredded Hearts Valentines Day Mani

This quick and easy heart nail art is perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Using washi tape, a Japanese masking tape that isn’t too sticky, you can cut any shape to create your own nail art.

I know it’s predictable, but these hearts are still cute for Valentine’s Day. Using a shredded or crackle polish keeps them from being too sickly sweet.

Nail Tutorial: Shredded Hearts for Valentine’s Day

Nail Romance - Shredded Hearts Valentines Day Nails Tutorial

  • I’ve started with this pink-red ombre manicure, but pick your favorite shade for your base color. It’s best to let your polish dry for at least 15 minutes before applying the tape.
  • Next take a small piece of washi tape, fold it in half and cut a small heart that fits your nail.
  • Place the washi tape on your nail and press down to ensure a smooth edge.
  • Paint a thin coat of your shredded polish. I used Maybelline Silver Stunner Shredded Topcoat. Only use one thin coat to make the most of the shredded effect. If you paint this polish too thick you won’t see the full effect.
  • Remove the tape before the polish dries to ensure you get a clean edge to your heart.

A total first world problem is choosing what colour to paint your nails.

I can never decide so I love a gradient manicure.

Creating an ombre effect across your nails is the easiest way to get the look. I tried it with a mix of blues and purple polishes but this tonal pink-red ombre is a new fave.

I’m wearing a range of essie shades: Sugar Daddy, Cute as a button, e nuf is e nuf, Lollipop & Really Red.
